RX-DT680 cassette issues

Decided to drop a cassette in and listen...but the keys no longer respond. Regardless of which one i put it in, it will look like it's playing when i press >>, but when i press > it just clicks. after i press >> and it starts 'playing' it becomes unresponsive. Anyone had these symptoms occur? Let me know - thanks!

hello,yes this is a common issue with these,the decks only work when there is a cassette in,inside the deck is a number of micro switches,one of which detects that there is a cassette in,the switch becomes dirty and makes the deck intermittent,so sometimes it will work and sometimes it wont,in worse cases,the deck wont work at all,best thing to do is use some switch cleaner,you may have to take it apart to do it..

Thanks guys. I did take it apart and tinkered with the switches. I noticed that the switches do detect the presence of a tape, etc. So would that really explain why the fast fwd button would instead make the cassette play instead? One person on the other forum said that the button switches on the PCB was bad... have anyone heard of that issue?

if you cant cure it,do what i did and bridge the back of the micro switch that detects the tape,just solder it..so it will cure it once and for all,the only difference will be you will be able to press play ect without a cassette in..

Absolutely my friend,the dt680 is a lovely machine,they sound awsom too,we do need to keep these things alive

Splendid! It worked! What I did was sprayed contact cleaner into each of the switch, then inserted a sliver of aluminum foil so that the upper contact comes closer to the bottom and increases its sensitivity to a cassette inserted. However, the right side may need to have the solder joints on the back shorted as the switches themselves as you suggested may be completely broke - fixed it perfectly only to find when i reassembled it it went back to being iffy..

..nothing like a fully working RX-DT680! just need to re-do right side and demag/align head/clean mechanisms and i'm golden! thanks again!

off the subject a bit, but where do you folks get belts for the tape decks on the
680? Ive been directed around to some sites but found nothing yet.
