Sometimes when you are working on a tape deck, you find that the belts are ok and a good cleaning is in order. Many boom box models are a pain to dismantle for a good cleaning of belts and pulleys. Others are difficult to power up while apart as the wires to the back are too short.

When I work on this kind of monster I use a trick you may not know. I dis-connect one wire from the motor of the deck I'm working on. Then I solder a 9 volt battery clip to the motor and let the deck run from this alone.

Now you can hold your chemical soaked Q-tips on the pulleys and belts as they spin, without the risk of damage caused by forcing mechanism. The risk of accidental shorts caused by clip leads popping off and other mishaps are minimized because only the motor is powered.

This tip makes cleaning models like the sharp GF-777 a walk in the park.
