Well, yes and no.

They sure look alike, don't they? I was sure the Portland TC-1000T was just a rebadged Sanyo M7900K. Not exactly! Now that I own both (got the Portland just yesterday), I can tell you the Portland wasn't made in Japan by Sanyo, but in Korea by Daewoo. Says so on the nameplate. The sound seems the same (to me), and the controls, as you can see, are virtually identical. What's up?

Well, I'd say what we have here is either a Sanyo design made under license by Daewoo, or a Korean copy of a Japanese boombox!

So... twins from different parents! Is that genetically possible?

Have you opened up the Portland to see where the parts came from? It might actually have some Sanyo parts. ;-)

Ok, you win!

But for non-specialists it looks very similar....

BTW: Just wanted to look for the model number of the MUSIKLAND > no one at it. :sadno:

the musikland units often used propper names(eigennamen)
also did tokyo(monkey,barracuda,bidland,beaver asw.)
and radiotone(bilbao,cordoba,george,lissabon,madrid,malga)

musikland:fashion, cube,(they had number-type decriptions as well -it seems not on every unit-begining with 30-.

for example 30-38297 and 30-36952(`donna box)

Jens, do you think Daewoo copied the Sanyo?
Or did Sanyo allow Daewoo to produce some aka's in Korea?
I believe that your last assumption is true...this thesis has got the most examples.
They might have had some contracts with them- actually ,the entire AKA-WORLD is indeed weird.
Just imagine around different 12.000 are in the base.
More than 5000 of these are aka boxes.

Your question also requires a elaborately, detailed answer.

My research results:
trademark / brand owners signed contracts with the manufacturers.

Manufacturers sold OEM licences.
Manufacturers made contracts,

with : trademark holders like trading chains
with: trademark holders like import companies
with : trademark holders like mail order houses

The situation shows up like follows:
BRANDS are defined by TRADEMARKS within a Copyright protection listings.
This is a matter of cause in the entire planet.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EXEPT EUROPE !
The European law includes the folowing content.
The BRAND -owner CORRELATES the MANUFACTURER.

That means :if a unit is BRANDED UNIVERSUM (and manufactured by SANYO) :
the MANUFACTURER now is UNIVERSUM (by EU law defination)

The reason her is the law liability for warranty responsibilities.
The EU does not want a responsible warranty counterpart outside EUROPE.
The seller (an EU located company) must be the "person in charge".

I mean ,it`s really easy to analyze the search results from the base - and related aka lists give hints enough for further studies.

And it`s also quite easy to analyze patent sheets, company backgrounds and affiliations and relationships between companies in relevant trade and technical literature. ;-) :-)

I often visit libraries(to research for my profession)
-and so I`m researching some facts for that theme as well.

That`s it.
Easy to answer.
cool.
