hey all.....just aquired an 880 and i need some info on the centre speaker set up....is it a speaker or just a radiator disc....

It's just a radiator, basically a flat plate with some backing material I believe and it uses a normal speaker surround. When this is setup correctly it works very well in this box.

I would caution against weighting the radiator, you will change the intended performance and put uneven stress on the surround. The radiator should literally be free floating and the only control characteristic should be provided by the stiffness of the surround. You could experiment with different surrounds to change the characterisitcs, using stiffer or floppier materials and this would achieve what your thinking.tshorba said:Has anyone ever weighed the passive radiator/ABR

Yep that's right, just took mine apart yesterday.
There are metal plates on the sides of the box that are covering screws that allow you to take the front grill off. Does anyone know how I take those plates off?
at the moment its got a speaker in there....looks like a dual cone affair......cant test it though as im not getting any soundfrom the box at all......i need to re-foam the outers as well but i think the question has been answered about what should be there.........anyone any ideas what i can use as a replacement for the center

you could use a rigid piece of cardboard cut round with the foam attached just like on the old one .
i have an old school kicker speaker box with 2 6.5 inch woofers driving a 10 inch passive radiator and believe it or not the radiator is made from really stiff cardboard with foam backing and it sounds fantastic
plus i know it's the original ,i just could not believe any part made from cardboard could hold up like that but it does and under a lot of sound pressure too.
Any flat, lightweight and stiff material could work. thanks lads....excellent helpfull advice.....one more thing....i am gonna need some foam rings for the inner and outer holes in order to re-foam...

i have done 2 sets of 880 woofers , the main drivers are 5" , i used these foams and they fit perfectly ,you need 2 kits to do the main woofers .

the cs 880 is not that hard to open up , the electronics are housed in the top of the unit only the power supply and the speakers are sealed in a separate chamber on the bottom ,it's a big pain to remove the front grill but if you open it up you can get a more accurate measurement of the radiator or whatever size the hole it to put a radiator in .dave-bush said:thanks floyd...just ordered the outers from there....just need the size of the centre one now

weighed NOT added weight, i am fully aware of how an ABR works. For people that are unsure, the ABR should be equal to the mass of air that would be in the "port". As for uneven stress on the surround, I would have to disagree. ABR's use the same surrounds as dynamic drivers. Many ABR's availabe today have a tuneable mass by adding weight eg http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdet ... er=295-494
