Had this model for years and decided to give it a clean up. I was shocked at the amount of (what seems) to be either sawdust or tobacco inside! I think the GF 9090 is c 1978.
I had to replace the capstan wheel as it had rotted. It was a piece of rubber that was below the top half that drove the idler wheel. It took a while to replace as I had to dismantle the capstan from the flywheel at the back.
I'd found the front cover had been off before and some of the screws had been forced and cause the plastic holders to break off. These were glued on with a bit of patience.

Cleaning near the selectors below was required as it had gone a little rusty under the protective felt

A large amount of dust and dirt as you can see

The belt on the left was stuck and didn't move, so I took it off and put it back, it started moving again!

Radio internals seem in good order

This is the capstan that had a section underneath with the rubber roller that had rotted. (See arrow) I used a short section of electrical wire covering for this.
This took quite a while, dismantling the capstan flywheel from the main capstan pole and cleaning the black goo left behind by the rotted roller that was on it.

Controls needed cleaning too

Transformer seems good

Radio circuitry

Lookin real nice   just got to love the Sharp line ups. An idea about main capstan drive is we use very small fuel line from Rc cars. You can get it from local hobby shop. If you need size you can do a search in the search bar ;-) That Sharp is Sharp :-D

I have a 9090 which was just as dirty inside. I've opened the box up a couple of times with a view to sorting the perished bit on the capstan. I got as far as getting to the flywheel on the back of the tape mechanism but then couldn't work out how to get the flywheel and capstan out (I've never done this before!)...any clues? I have 2 other sharps with the same problem and am paranoid about breaking something I can't fix!!

You just have to pull flywheel out. There is a rubber drive tire on front side that most likely is goo. It's probably very sticky holding it in. Afterwards the rubber goo needs to be completely cleaned with rubbing alcohol... Then you have to replace it with new tire. What we use is a rubber fuel tube that you can get from hobby store. Cut it to size and use sand paper to smooth edges and to roughen up outer tire. Might take a couple tries to get it right. Just buy enough tube. Good luck!!!

Thanks badboybill. It seems to be held in by the plastic pulley wheel on the other side. I tried levering that off but it seemed stuck fast...should this wheel just slide off?...I just don't want to force and break anything as I really like this box! I've read loads on possible replacement for the melted so I don't think that will be a problem

In that last pic it seems to use a different style of input. Would you happen to know where to get one of those wires? Just got a GX-300 and it has the same input on the back. Plus my TELEFUNKEN as well. HELP :'-(
