Hi Everybody,

Firstly let me say how excellent this site is, I am new to the boombox world and absolutely love the info and pics here! With that being said, I am hoping you knowledgeable people can give me a little bit of info...

I have recently purchased a TRK-8080E in the hope that I could plug an mp3 player into the DIN socket via a 3.5mm - DIN cable. I have tried that and it does play but it is very quiet. When on radio it has no problem bursting my ear drums but through line in I doubt it would scare a mouse with a nervous disposition. The box also has 2 x mic line in which as far as I can see also don't seem to do a lot, though it could just be the person operating it (most likely cause) that is the problem!

The motor doesn't work for the casette player but I was wondering if I got a 3.5mm - casette adapter whether that would be likely to work or not?

Any thoughts on how to either fix or get my mp3 player playing through the box would be massively appreciated!

Thanks in advance

Ben

I had a go but couldn't get anything through, forgive me if I'm being a bit thick here but if there are 2 x 3.5mm mic inputs would I need to split a stereo jack to 2 x mono to hear anything or should a stereo work in one of the jacks?

According to this youtube vid, there is a 5 plug din on the back of the 8080e connection for input.

You'd have to find the right cable or schematics and make your own for your ipod.

I have the 8080W (love it!) The differences that I can tell by watching the above mentioned youtube vid are that mine has regular RCA line in, and my tuner has FM,SW1,SW2,AM. The 8080E must stand for England? does yours have the BBC marked radio stations with the FM,SW,MW,LW Tuning?

good luck!

I wish mine had the RCA inputs, it would certainly make life a lot easier! :-) I have a stereo 3.5mm cable to DIN that I got from eBay, do you think if it is wired incorrectly that could be why the volume is so low through the DIN socket?

It certainly does have all the BBC, Luxe, Beromunster etc. markings on there, it's a lovely looking thing, just wish I could use it for something other than radio at the moment

Thanks for your comments, greatly appreciated!

I am assuming you're using the Line In or Aux setting, not Phono? (phono is rubbish)

If you got a DIN to 3.5mm cable, then yeah, that's the correct way to do it. I use cables like that and have no problem at all. Try raising the volume of your mp3 player to max. If that doesn't work, try spraying some DeOxit on the DIN input, because it might be dirty. And if that doesn't work, there's probably nothing you can do. Some boomboxes just weren't designed with the correct impedence to receive modern input signals.

Thanks for your replies once again, it currently plays when set to 'line in' whilst using the 5pin DIN but I would estimate at about a 10th of the volume that the unit is capable of, do you think I would hear anything if it was wired incorrectly?

Chevyman: That diagram is just the kind of thing I've been looking for and your pics are very helpful, are you currently using DIN - DIN? Which wiring worked for you? I'm hoping it might be similar to the 8080 though experience tells me things like this aren't always so straight forward! Maybe I'll rip the end off the adapter tomorrow and try and rewire it :-)

I can see this boombox malarky getting pretty addictive!

I also have this problem with my 8180EM. I am using a 5pin DIN to 3.5mm and the volume is extremely low. Have anyone found the correct diagram or link to a site very i can buy the correct cable? nestable did you ever solve the problem?

Hey guys, do you try to connect other device to this line in
- a tape deck, another boombox with line out, cd or dvd player???
If the sound is bad - problem is in boombox...
If the sound level is good with another device,
there is no problem with boombox - problem is in mp3 player.
Usually mp3 player is made to listen sound
only with headphones and output level is low.
MP3 line out level is 300-400 mv maximum...
Standart line out level (CD player, tape deck) is 1 v.
This is 3 times higner than mp3 player...

Crusty, you can connect your mp3 player with mic mixing jack in 8180EM.
Sound must be good, but mono...

My 8080 (now with another member and being used for parts to keep more old Hitachis going) works fine with a DIN cable to the aux input, but the line in position on the selector switch is confusing as that's only so that you can record from an external source, so if you want the monitor to work at the same time, you need to press pause and record with the switch set at line in. ;-)

No, the E doesn't stand for England! Interesting idea though, except that we'd need an S version to work here on the Scottish side of the Border, a W version to work in Wales and an NI version to work in Northern Ireland. Maybe also an Eeh version to work in the People's Republic of Yorkshire. I'll get my coat..

The 8080 with RCA line in inputs doesn't require any tape deck involvement to get full sound from an MP3 player.
Scotty's imported euro M90 with din inputs has very low sound from the line in. Only the phono inputs via an attenuator works properly for MP3 inputs.

Goodman: Have tried the mic input but the sound gets distorted on higher volumes.

Will try to solder a 3 pin DIN using pinout 2,3,5 just as shown on the pictures above.

What do i need to get ipod working on the phono input? the sound gets wayyyy to distorted of course.. you mention a attenuator, what's that? link please

Not sure which way i should be looking when following the pinout but i just soldered the cables so that it looked just like on chevyman's picture. And know it works flawlessly! All i need now is to get my hands on a service manual.
