wich boombox do you own that you think is really underated and why.
mine is this sears m9998 look alike made by siemens which i suspect also made the m9998k i have as well.
it really is a excellent sounding boombox and has a cool green backlit tuner dial.
i think a lot of people would pass this box by seeing the sears badge, but they would be making a mistake doing so as this really is a sleeper of a boombox both sound wise and quality wise. i am betting it was not too cheap when it was new either.

i have had this one for a month or so now and it is getting used more than any of the other boomers here.
why despite its medium size it really puts out a extremely well balanced high quality sound.
it sounds on par to my ears with the sk-95 but seems to have slightly more bass.
i think this is beacause of the way the speaker enclosures are designed. while i have not taken it apart i am betting there is some kind of separation between the speaker and middle section.
comparing it to lets say the m80 there is really no contest. this smaller sears badged box sounds miles ahead of it.
really this is a radio you are doing yourself a injustice if you dismiss it based on its sears moniker.

interesting thread , bill --

i have a little marantz 3500 --which is about 1/2 the size of its big daddy--
the 7000 --
but it sounds almost 3/4 as good.

also - the little blinky junior size kaboom --looks like a
joke/toy :-)
and, while its far from the power league of the full size kaboom -
it sure hangs with all the other medium size boxes of any brand

to me i would rather have a excellent well balanced mid sized boombox than a low quality huge one.
dont get me wrong i think some of big ones are very good quality but...
there is way more satisfaction in overall sound than shear volume and bass.
a good tuner is important to me as well. while you are never going to get any boombox that compares to a four gang or five gang tuner home stereo, some of them are very good.
this sears boombox while lacking some things is really very excellent.

Hello Bill. That is a great box you have there and unmistakably a rebadged Sanyo. However, it is not the M9998 that it copies as you may think but is actually the Sanyo M9996. In fact while some boombox alias will make small minute changes to the design to that it doesn't look 100% the same, yours seems to only have changed the nameplate.

The M9998 is quite well known so the visual relationship is easy to recognize. However, the M9998 is a larger unit (664mm vs 582mm for the M9996). You'll also note that the M9998 uses 10-D cells while the M9996 uses 8-D cells. If you are impressed with the sound of yours, I imagine you may be even more impressed with an actual M9998.

There are other differences as well but you get the idea -- clearly a M9996 you've got there.

oh i have a m9998k but this one does look quite a bit like it. there is more than a few differences tho.
honestly my 9998k is slightly better but not so much that the difference blows me aways.
this model seems to have been also sold under this model number as well.

http://www.stereo80s.com/bbx.cfm?id=811

do you know if these boxes were made by sanyo that is the m9998k and m9996 or did sanyo sub contract someone else to make them.
i know that this sears box was also sold under the siemens name
the model line of these black sanyos seem to have really different looks from some of the other boomboxes they were producing at the time.
these black boomboxes sanyo put out really are very nicely made. heavy and seem to be higher quality than some of the other sanyo stuff that came after.

Actually there were 7 different types of this box brought on the market,

in alphabethic order:

am-fm,some with additional ot443 sticker,some with as-sound8-sticker,two wave

2-wave

fm,sw1.sw2,am

2-wave

and i mean it`s indeed NOT underrated since it is a very sought after box in the last couple of years.... :-) ;-)

4-wave

4-wave

Very good thread! Mine would be the G.E. 3-6000 and, coincidentally, the Sears 2199.Both are mid sized 1 piece boxes with surprisingly good bass. They often times go for quite literally nothing on Ebay. I personally like the sleek lines of a 6000 about as much as the looks of any box I can think of. Recently I picked up my second 6000 for $10.50.Real sleepers both of these boxes!

I would imagine there's not a whole lot of full sized or jumbo types that are under rated by collectors.Anything in the largest category is likely to be over rated by default as people expect so much from the biggest of anything.

well-I do agree with you Jovie.

the 3-6000 is a real unique box with interesting features and one of the most elegant boxes ever.

Even though I've mentioned this one before, I can't help but show it again: the Contec 8913-2S. Amazing, full sound, great looks and lots of lights... especially for a box of this (medium) size. A true sleeper... that I know has some aliases. Next to the Sears 2199, my favorite "underrrated boombox."
