While playing with my GF 8989 in the office (lunch time of course), a work mate has bought in a GF 525 for me to see.

Looks great, except that its ON - OFF seems to be ON all the time, the switch moves but does not power the unit down.

Also the 1st tape deck is not playing. (the FF and RW are fine however).

Questions,

1 - How easy is it to open the unit for a look at the switch.
2 - How easy to change the belt for the tape drive.

Like to get a rough idea before getting the screw drivers out.

Cheers

Tim

With those Sharp GFs, I would say:

Opening up=piece of cake.

Changing belts: Pain in the butt.

At least that is what I saw from my GF777...idk about the differences to the 525.

The power switch likely is a bigger issue..I have the same on my Intersound J747. It does not turn off.
I have no idea how to fix that but it does not bother me at all...I just unplug it  .

Did your collegue offer it to you for sale? Then take it!

If the GF-525 is anything like the similar GF-666, the front and back portions of the case will come off leaving a center, metal chassis that holds everything. Also, just like on the GF-777, the cassette mechanism is a pain in the butt to get to, but once removed it isn't that bad. The power switch might turn out to be an easy fix. Sometimes the microswitches can become corroded and just need a little sanding.

Take some pictures of the power switch once you get it apart and we'll go from there.

Will do.

Not too fussed about the deck as I would use an MP3 cassette in there, and that seems to be working fine.

The on-off fix could be handy.

Here it is

Its mint condition, just a shame about the little bug bears.

I did....

Cost me a few quid as the guy was looking on Ebay and saw one go for quite a lot recently, but it will look great in the rear window of my van in the summer.

Thats why I need the On- Off sorting, it will be a bugger fillin it up with batteries all the time..

Does the power switch have a nice, crisp feel to it when switching or does it feel sort of "mushy"?

Dude on my 515 it was a few bad solders. Same problem whit power switch. Took it apart and check the solders on the tape compartment  . There is something whit the sleep mode and the tape compartment . It was damn easy fix. Sadly when i put closed it back i made a mistake whit the record pin and now need to take it apart one more time (not recording). But im lazy  .
